Avoid if you want a Vegetable Garden...Only ONE good piece of information in THE ENTIRE BOOK (and that is to take Paper and Pen, and PLAN your Garden...Pages 20-32)The saddest thing is that a tree had to die to be turned into the paper that this book was written on. What a waste!
I found this a fun, quick read with a refreshing attitude toward gardening. For those of us who enjoy the beauty of gardens; but despair of ever finding enough time to manage one with minimal help, this book offers hope for a reasonable way to do both. "Serious" gardeners may find it insulting. The rest of us may find the book helps us to let go of the "guilt" of not spending every free hour making a perfect garden which we have no time to enjoy.
One author is a horticulturist, the other an editor. The title says it all. The book gives many concrete hints for landscaping that looks nice, whatever your area of the country. Many are common sense planting items requiring alot of watering near hoses; planting items that grow well in your area, rather than exotics requiring alot of work. But it also has some interesting, innovative ideas easy growing roses, night gardens.
I give it four rather than 5, because to *really* make the 20 minutes work, you need to hire someone to do the mowing.
These guys should've been stand-up comedians...instead, they are articulate, knowledgeable, outspoken advocates of stress-free, fun gardening. If you're looking for a way to keep your sanity AND have a beautiful yard, this is the book for you. If you want one of those full-color, photo-filled coffeetable gardening books that only uses the Latin names for plants (and assumes you have no life other than gardening) move on. My favorite chapter is "Peter Rabbit Had It Coming"!
I can't believe Random House actually published this book. As another reviewer mentioned, you have to wade through these two guys, Marty and Tom, going on and on about their relationship, joshing and attempting to be humorous to ferret out the gardening advice which turns out to be pretty lame and often inaccurate. Strawberries, for example, are listed as an easy to grow ground cover. Not recommended as a gardening book nor as humor. I did, however, think the advice on taking cuttings from graveyard roses, which bothered another reviewer so much, was one of the few worthwhile parts of the book.
It is the quintessential gardening motivator, combined with the expert advice and recommendations. I've owned and reread this book for many years and, unlike most other gardening books I have purchased, it will not sit pristine and dusty on the shelves. There will be little left of it, as oft-used as it is, and any dirt on it will be real dirt. Thanks guys.
I am quite happy with this book, and would highly recommend it to others.
I also have the 20 minute vegetable gardener, and I am so impressed with the info in both that I plan on sharing it with an aunt who LOVES to garden also, but who could definitely benefit from their thoughts and ideas for putting into play the 20 minute concept.
